Apple may be preparing to launch its own music streaming service, but that won’t stop Pandora from competing on the Cupertino company’s own devices. Speaking to Fox Business, Pandora CFO Mike Herring called the iPhone-maker a “frenemy” before promising to “definitely” launch on CarPlay.
Pandora’s absence on CarPlay when it first launched came as a bit of a surprise, though Apple does already offer its own competing service with iTunes Radio. Thankfully, it looks like the popular Internet radio app will add support for Cupertino’s car dashboard system. As for the incoming smartwatch, it’s likely something is already in the works.
“We were part of what made it fun to have an iPhone,” he told Fox, suggesting the same could be true for the Apple Watch. Then again, there are a lot more options now then existed when Pandora first launched. Whether the company can take on Apple’s new service along with Spotify and the rest remains to be seen, but it will be an added bonus to Pandora users.
Despite increased competition, Pandora is still showing solid growth. The service is one of the most popular options out there, grabbing 51 percent of the U.S. market in an RBC Capital Markets survey (via eMarketer) last November compared to Spotify’s 14 percent. If the company wants to keep that lead it needs to be everywhere, even if it means challenging Apple on its own platforms.
