Mortal Kombat X’s tools for audio? Slime, a bucket and a plunger

With the more recent Mortal Kombat games, fatalities have moved from old school neat to mostly insanely gross. The visuals meet the sound effects head on for a grotesque finally in a battle to the death for a set of horrible video game personalities.

It works really well for this series, and Mortal Kombat X will feature even more of these Fatalities.

NetherRealm Studios shared some of the behind the scenes magic it takes to make those fatalities sound so terrible in a recent live broadcast that comes by way of IGN. You can see and hear the segment for yourself in the video at the head of this post, but it all comes down to a studio, a bucket, a plunger, a PVC pipe and a ton of slime.

Yep, it sounds absolutely disgusting.

I always love seeing what makes the sounds we hear in games and movies. Take, for instance, The Evil Within. The flesh tearing sound effects when the zombies finally make their molar mark? Made with cantaloupe. Gross, yet amazing.

Mortal Kombat X will hit the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on April 14. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game were delayed until later this year.
