Android 5.0 Lollipop for Xperia Z3 family goes global

Earlier this month, Sony finally started pushing its Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and the Z3 Tablet Compact. The new software was limited to just a few European countries at the time, but now it’s rolling out around the world.

Sony already takes a pretty hands off approach to Android, so we’ll be getting what looks like a near-stock version of Lollipop with a few extra tweaks. That means interactive notifications on the lockscreen, new security features and a Material Design refresh. You’ll also gain the ability to save apps to the device’s removable microSD card.

We’re still not sure when to expect Sony’s new update here in the U.S., though it will likely vary depending on your carrier. Then again, anyone who picked up an Xperia Z3 Compact straight from the Japanese company should hopefully see their software jump to Android 5.0 Lollipop very soon. Sony adds that the Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet will get the same update starting next week as it prepares to upgrade its entire flagship lineup.
