There’s a Half-Life 2 update coming, but don’t get any ideas

Half-Life 2 is getting a substantial update this week, but don’t get overly excited quite yet. This isn’t a precursor to any big Half-Life announcements.

A fan-made mod, created with approval from Valve, will pop up on Steam as a free download very soon. The update gives the game a fresh coat of paint. Earlier versions of the mod have been available for some time and started as early as 2009 when it added HDR lighting effects.

Now, though, the game features more detailed shadows, water effects, better fog effects, more natural lighting and greater world detail. Some of the lighting and fog effects are especially noticeable and add a lot of atmosphere to the game.

In addition to the visual effects, a new commentary mode has been added featuring over 100 commentary nodes scattered throughout the game. Some of the content of these nodes comes via the YouTube channel Did You Know Gaming, so that should give you an idea of what kind of content to expect.

Half-Life 2: Update promises to be the most comprehensive and stable version of Half-Life 2 to date and will be available soon. If you’ve been looking for a reason to revisit City 17, this might be the best one yet.
