HTC chairwoman Cher Wang today becomes the Taiwanese company’s new CEO, with Peter Chou stepping down to lead its Future Development Lab. Wang co-founded HTC back in 1997, and has been increasingly involved in the running of the company in recent years.

“As an entrepreneur at heart, I am excited to see so many new opportunities, and I am honored to accept this opportunity to help shape the next stage of HTC’s development,” Wang said in HTC’s press release.

With Chou already focusing on product development in a role “in which he has demonstrated world-class design and cutting-edge technology expertise,” HTC says, the company’s board of directors felt it was time to make the changes that would allow him to continue doing that in a greater capacity.

Chou has been with HTC since the very beginning, and has enjoyed plenty of ups and downs as CEO — including the transition from a handheld device maker to a global branded company, the launch of the One series of smartphones, and the sale of Beats Electronics.

In his new role as head of the Future Development Lab, “Chou will be instrumental in identifying future growth opportunities for the Company,” HTC says.
