EVE: Online has a reputation for being a dense and intimidating game full of numbers. To take part in the incredible stories of betrayal and intrigue people tell about the game, you have to wade through spreadsheets and meetings and have a lot of patience. Somehow, I don’t think EVE: Valkyrie is going to have that problem.
We’re in an awesome renaissance of space shooters with EVE: Valkyrie and Star Citizen on the way and Elite: Dangerous already available. Flight sticks are once again taking their places alongside the keyboard and mouse, and VR headsets might become the next piece of required hardware for these sorts of games.
At Fanfest 2015 this week, CCP showed off the latest pre-alpha gameplay footage of EVE: Valkyrie, and it’s hard to deny that it adds something to the experience of flying through space. As the person in control of the ship moves about their fleet, zipping between ships, they’re able to easily look in one direction, through the accumulated dust on their ship’s cockpit window, exploring their surroundings and deciding what to do next. My biggest problem with games like these has always been getting my bearings, and the headset looks to largely mitigate that.
EVE: Valkyrie is in development for PC and PlayStation 4 to be used with Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, respectively. A release date has yet to be announced.
