Emojis are great. They make it possible to convey your thoughts with a just a few quick images tapped out on a smartphone or tablet. Bringing those same colorful pictures to your computer isn’t quite as easy, but one new Kickstarter project is stepping in with a clever solution.
The Emoji Keyboard sits on top of your MacBook, overlaying each key with a different image. It works pretty much the same as the covers used to write in different alphabets, employing a bit of extra software to turn your Caps Lock key into an Emoji Mode button.
Of course, there’s way more emojis out there than keys on your keyboard. So each button also offers access to extra images, which you can bring up by holding down Shift, Control or Option. In total, that adds up to over 150 different emojis right at your fingertips.
Unfortunately, the Emoji Keyboard only works with Mac. It comes in two different sizes that fit either the full-sized keyboard on the 13/15-inch MacBook models and Apple’s wireless keyboard, or the smaller setup on the 11-inch MacBook Air. You can pre-order one on Kickstarter for $15 and receive it by April, or pay $35 for both the keyboard cover and a user guide to help you get the most out of your emojis.
With the keyboard cover and the emoji software that goes with already finalized, all that’s left is for the company to pick a factory and start production. Delays are still possible though, meaning you might not receive your order quite as soon as promised.
