Xiaomi announces a $64 GoPro competitor

Xiaomi already dominates the smartphone market in China. Now, the company is expanding its lineup yet again with a new action cam that significantly undercuts GoPro’s cheapest model. The Yi Action Camera starts at just ¥ 399 (roughly $64) compared to the $130 GoPro HERO.

The Yi packs a 16-megapixel lens and shoots 1080p video at 60fps. It also packs Sony’s powerful Exmor R CMOS image sensor and offers up to 64GB of storage. Of course, this is a GoPro competitor, so it works underwater (up to 40 meters) and features a durable plastic design in white or green.

Xiaomi has also developed a mobile app for controlling your Yi Action Camera. Beyond using your phone to snap pictures and record video, you can also transfer files between devices over Wi-Fi and even edit them from inside the app.

For now, the company says its only selling the new camera in China, where it already boasts a huge fan base. Then again, it might not be too long before the Yi is available for U.S. customers as well. Xiaomi already said it plans to start selling non-mobile devices in America in the near future, and an action camera at this price seems like an obvious win anywhere in the world.
