Pebble just announced a new metal version of its Time smartwatch, but the company has even more news to share this week. We’re also getting a first look at smartstraps, which will let Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel accessory-makers pack extra features and functionality into the device’s strap.
The company isn’t making any smartstraps of its own, at least not for now. Instead, it’s offering up designs for a special connector that allows power to flow from the watch’s battery to the strap. Of course, that might mean cutting down on your Pebble’s battery life, though it’s limited to 20mA in an effort to avoid ruining one of the device’s best features.
What smartstraps becomes depends entirely on accessory makers, and could range from extra battery life to advanced fitness tracking to pretty much anything else you can imagine. We’re excited to see what developers come up with, though it could be a while before any actually hit the market. Pebble says it won’t release an official API until a few months after its new watch starts shipping, though hopefully it wont’ be too long after that before the first smartstraps become available.
