March is here, and the third month of our Gregorian calendar has become something of a “second holiday season” over the last few years. Hits are lined up for big releases, and the perfect timing allows for plenty of chances to stock up on a backlog for the slow summer burn.
One of the biggest releases in March is Sony’s and From Software’s PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne. We’ve been following this game for years now, but with just one month to go, the time has come to lure the mainstream viewers into this spiritual successor to Dark Souls.
The first TV spot is just as awkward and predictable as you might expect. A montage of pre-rendered CG, in-engine gameplay glossed underneath a transparent graphic, seemingly meaningful exposition being sputtered out by a narrator, and a rock song taken out of context to match the imagery on the screen.
Games don’t sell games, decorating them as mainstream entertainment does.
That being said, Sony has done a great job propping Bloodborne up as one of the biggest “must own” games of early 2014, and it will launch exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on Mar. 24.
Maybe I’ll be finished digging through the Duscae region by then to give it a go at launch.
