Things are not looking good in the United Kingdom for BlackBerry according to two new reports.
At the height of its popularity in the U.K., BlackBerry enjoyed nearly 8 million users of its handsets. That was in June 2012. Ever since then, however, that number has been dropping ever month since then.
In a new report from eMarketer shared exclusively with The Guardian, Blackberry has dropped to as few as 700,000 non-business users through out the United Kingdom, and by 2017 that number is expected to have fallen to as few as 400,000.
“BlackBerry’s fall from grace has been spectacular, but these latest figures show that even its previously loyal core seems to be leaving in droves,” said Bill Fisher, UK analyst at eMarketer. “Its market share has been decimated by Android and iOS, and more recently by Windows Phone, which is slowly gaining a foothold in the UK market.”
This report was also echoed by new research from Kantar Worldpanel that says there are currently 1.4 million non-business users, but that the number is declining at a rate of 56,000 a month. Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, told the paper, “I’d expect we would see fewer than a million people with a BlackBerry as their primary handset around September 2015.”
As these numbers continue to decline for BlackBerry, its market share is quickly disappearing. According to eMarketer, BlackBerry now makes up just 1.9 percent of the U.K. market with Android at 56.2 percent, iOS at 32.2 percent and Windows Phone at 8.5 percent. Kantar’s numbers varied slightly with Android at 49.6 percent, iOS at 38.1 percent and Windows Phone at 6.5 percent.
While this may appear bleak, it’s unclear if this will even phase BlackBerry CEO John Chen. He has said numerous times since taking over in Thorsten Heins in Nov. 2013 that he wanted to focus on the enterprise customers. While this may appear as doom and gloom for the company, it is quite possible that it will just take it in stride and move on.
