Sony throws a sale celebrating the PS Vita’s three year anniversary

Jet Set Radio

I’m huge supporter of the PS Vita, and it’s easily been my console of choice as of late. The original content is somewhat lacking, but its ability to play indie favorites and retro classics on the move is unrivaled by any other platform out there.

Three years ago, when the Vita was first launched, Sony hyped it as a way to take the AAA experience with you wherever you go, but the flow of time simply took it in a separate direction. It has evolved into one of the last places to stumble across great Japanese cult-hits and a bastion for the JRPG genre to push technical boundaries at a relatively cheap budget compared to the current generation consoles.

To celebrate these three years, Sony is throwing a sale that pays tribute to all of these categories of games. AAA hits, indies, JRPGs, culty games, and retro favorites, they are all super cheap, and it even has a few freebies to give away as well. I love myself a good Sony sale, so let’s see what’s available.

If you are looking for that absolute best value of the bunch, I recommend Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. I just recently played through it myself, and the core game alone is easily worth $7.49. It is a remake of the PC Engine CD’s lost classic Castlevania: Rondo of Blood recreated with a new 3D graphic. We’ve reached a point in time where early 3D is now retro and nostalgic, and this remake’s style fits that description perfectly.

However, on top of an excellent and loyal remake, players also have the ability to unlock the original Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Keep in mind that these can be unlocked through “playing” rather than “paying.” Two of Castlevania’s most beloved hits, one of them ranking among the greatest games of all time, are secrets that are available the old fashioned way. Not DLC but rather traditional secrets that quadruple the value of this package.

The games I might be picking up on this sale are Home – A Unique Horror Adventure and Jet Set Radio. One is, as the title suggests, a fun little pick up and play horror game with a pixelated twist of the genre, and the other is a cult-classic I think I would appreciate much more these days taking it on the go.

Beyond these, the best choices are LIMBOZero Escape: Virtue’s Last RewardNew Little King’s Story, and Muramasa Rebirth.

Happy birthday to the PS Vita. We can only imagine where it will head next and what we’ll be celebrating at year four!
