Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden first screenshots, Arc System Works is developing

The recently announced Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden will star over 100 characters from the popular anime series when Bandai Namco brings it to the Nintendo 3DS. That’s certainly enough for  Dragon Ball fans of the world to get excited, but what about the rest of the world?

Will this be just another bad licensed fighting game?

It could seem like it, but the official website for the game has just gone live revealing that none other than Arc System Works is developing the game. With plenty of wonderful fighting hits like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Persona 4 Arena under its belt, that should be enough for fans of fighting games in general to be enthused as well.

Judging by the booming popularity of the studio, it makes you wonder why it took Bandai Namco so long to strike up this deal. Arc System Works did develop a pair of forgettable Dragon Ball Z games 10 years ago, but that was on the incredibly limited Game Boy Advance and hardly indicative of its true talents as a fighting game studio. Enough time has passed since then for both the technology and Arc System Works to be perfect for this project.

In addition to the studio announcement, we also have a wonderful collage of the character sprites and our first few screenshots centered on Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Trunks. Both Frieza and Piccolo turn up as opponents as well. Siliconera has the translations for their descriptions.

With moves like his x20 Kaio-ken Kamehameha, and the Spirit Bomb, Goku is an overall balanced character with nice reach with his attacks. He’s also speedy, which helps him pull off combos in mid-air with ease.

Vegeta, the Prince of Saiyans, has special attacks like his Final Flash and Galick Gun. His playstyle will revolve around his speed and tricky movements, along with various combos to go with them.

Teen Gohan has excellent reach with his powerful dash attacks, along with his Masenko attack and more. He doesn’t sound like a combo-heavy character like Goku and Vegeta, but he’s said to have some surprising and powerful mid-ranged attacks that he can use to his advantage.

Trunks (Future/Super) uses attacks like Buster Flash and Buster Cannon, and he specializes at mid-ranged attacks, similar to Gohan. He also has attacks that can help instantly close the distance between him and his opponents, giving him nice surprise attacks of his own.

Bandai Namco is aiming for a Japanese release this summer.
