Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D debuts at number 1 in Japan

I’ll never forget the day that my Japanese elementary school students asked me what kind of games I played. When I mentioned The Legend of Zelda, none of them knew what it was. One savvy kid was able to scramble his brains enough to think of “that old game.” Yeah, not the happiest moment in my gaming life. The series has always been more popular in the States than it has in its own country, but come on! I’m… I mean, it’s not that old!

It doesn’t quite see the numbers that Monster Hunter or Yokai Watch see in Japan, but The Legend of Zelda still demands a bit of attention from the video game crowd. Majora’s Mask 3D has opened in Japan in the number one slot with 230,065 units sold across the country according to research firm Media Create.

Again, keep in mind that Media Create does not measure digital sales, which might be higher with the Nintendo 3DS taking off in that realm.

All of the consoles, aside from the Xbox One, also saw a sharp spike in sales week-over-week with the New Nintendo 3DS XL spiking over a 50 percent rise, probably thanks to Link and his time-bending quest. 41,821 were sold throughout the country compared to the previous week’s 21,650 units. Majora’s Mask does take advantage of the New Nintendo 3DS’ extra c-stick.

Check out the full list of sales below, thanks to Gematsu.
