We don’t usually get to peek behind the curtain during the early development of big budget games. By the time we see titles like Sunset Overdrive, the team has all their stuff figured out. The basic art is in place and the gameplay loop has been finalized.
In this week’s Sunset TV, though, Insomniac is letting us do just that. The video above shows some very early footage from the game. The OD monsters had their basic design, and the team knew they wanted traversal to be an important part of the game, but at that point the game was more about shooting than it was about movement.
Looking at this, it becomes clear how important it is for teams to stay open to changes to their game, and the value in keeping your game under wraps shows through as well. We definitely ended up with the better game.
