Terraria: Otherworld announced for PC and Mac, not a sequel

Re-Logic and Engine Software have revealed Terraria: Otherworld, an off-shoot of its popular 2D sandbox game. Only PC and Mac versions have been officially announced so far, so don’t ask about consoles or mobile ports just yet. Nobody is hearing any of that noise.

The presser announces that the game is an exploration of “what might have been,” in the world of Terraria, and it features a new approach to the game’s iconic gameplay.

Set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe, Terraria: Otherworld places the player in a life-and-death struggle to restore a once-pristine world – now overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself – to its original splendor.

The new dark aesthetic makes it look more like Final Fantasy than it ever has before. Seriously, the main avatar looks just like Bartz from Final Fantasy V. Am I the only one who notices this?

Re-Logic has also made it very clear that this is not a sequel to Terraria, so please don’t call it that. Lead Developer Whitney “Cenx” Baird bluntly states on the game’s official forums that “This is NOT Terraria 2.”

So far, the game is only in pre-alpha, and Re-Logic has nothing else to share. We’ll keep an eye out as more becomes available.
