Nintendo of Japan has released some early and impressive sales numbers for the New Nintendo 3DS in the western territories.
The New Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL (only the XL is available in NA) combined to sell roughly 335,000 units in the North American and European regions. Nintendo of Japan released a small chart comparing the sales of this new hardware to the launch of the plain ol’ Nintendo 3DS XL.
Nintendo offers that a big reason for the sales jump is that hardware enthusiasts knew about the launch of the New 3DS and held off on buying any new Nintendo portable hardware until this one’s release. That seems like common sense, but it’s what it offers up in the briefing.
As for the Majora’s Mask and Monster Hunter limited edition units? Here’s Iwata says about those.
“I have received reports that pre-orders for this limited-edition hardware went so well that many retailers closed them before the launch date and the hardware almost sold out on the launch date.”
Sold. Out. I haven’t seen either custom unit for sale at retailers around me, though that’s only anecdotal.
Have you picked up a New Nintendo 3DS XL? What do you think?
