It’ll be a long, long while until we see Guardians of the Galaxy 2—May 5, 2017 to be exact. But director James Gunn is already sharing minor details about what to expect. In addition to revealing Guardians 2 will introduce new characters, Gunn said the sequel will answer questions about Peter Quill’s dad. Namely, just who the heck is he?
Comic fans will already know the answer to that question. But Gunn has no intentions of following the comic, a move that Marvel Studios executives are labeling “risky.”
In an interview with Alison Rosen, of Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, Gunn reveals he wants to take the film in a different direction.
“It’s different than what’s in the comic books,” Gunn told Rosen. “Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics. So when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with [Marvel Studios] and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’”
Risky, but the studio executives seemingly have confidence in Gunn’s storytelling talents. Gunn said he’s going to hand the story over to Marvel Studios in a few short weeks, after which “we’ll find out how well it works.”
Gunn also said the new characters he’s planning to introduce in Guardians 2 will be very important to the Marvel Universe as a whole. We can already rule out Darth Vader as the father, so who could it be? It might be a few years (or some leaked rumors) until we find out.
