Google and Twitter Team Up to Add Live Tweets to Search Results

Twitter and Google have reached a new agreement to pipe live tweets directly into your search results, Bloomberg said in a report. The new system should help expand Twitter’s reach beyond its website, while giving Google direct access to the social network’s steady stream of data.

Bringing tweets to Google Search should be as simple as granting access to Twitter’s firehose API, though we may not see a change for a few more months. The two companies had worked together previously on a similar deal, though it came to an abrupt end in 2011. More recently, Google began adding relevant tweets to highlighted news results in Search, though the company reportedly had to scan Twitter’s site to find those posts.

For Twitter, the new partnership will hopefully convince more people to sign up, especially now that there are even more features that should attract newcomers, such as Instant Timeline and a redesigned homepage. The social network has struggled to show solid growth, while competing services like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat continue to soar, hopefully the company can turn things around with a little help from Google.
