Whenever a multi-franchise developer has success with one series, it’s always a worry that the parts of that game that worked will bleed over into the others. This has especially been a problem with Ubisoft’s series, which shamelessly use parts from each other. We don’t have to worry about that with Mass Effect 4, though, says BioWare executive Aaryn Flynn.
Flynn posted on gaming forum NeoGAF to reassure fans.
“All of our games are using Frostbite now. We’ve said the next Mass Effect will use some of the technology from [Dragon Age: Inquisition]. We’ve been enjoying building larger areas that you can explore with less friction,” he said.
“But after that, the next Mass Effect will be drawing on its own rich and successful past more than what DAI would say it should do.”
The reintroduction of the Mako exploration vehicle, for example, was influenced more by the decision to make the game specifically for the new consoles than it was by the exploration elements of Dragon Age.
“We’re proud of what DAI has achieved, but that does not set a ‘template’ for what every other game we make needs to be.”
Mass Effect 4, or whatever BioWare ends up calling it, has a lot to live up to now that the series’ long-time protagonist, Commander Shepard, is out of the picture, but hopefully that will give the team a chance to do some new stuff with the property alongside what appears to be a conscious decision to not copy Dragon Age.
