Capcom Officially Announces Dragon’s Dogma Online, Free-to-Play MMO

Capcom has announced a massively multiplayer online game set in the Dragon’s Dogma fantasy world. The word comes from Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine.

The game will be a free-to-play action RPG available on PC, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with development being led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who also led development on the original. Players will be able to join an open world with 100-player lobbies and four-player parties.

The bad news is that, much like Capcom’s other free-to-play medievil game, deep down, there’s no word on a western release. Depending on how you feel about free-to-play games and microtransactions, this may not be a bad thing.

Dragon’s Dogma was a huge surprise when it hit in 2012. What looked like sort of a Dark Souls knock-off ended up being one of my favorite games that year. Free-to-play games seem to be taking greater and greater hold in the Japanese market, but I hope that this isn’t the new direction for what started as a neat new property from one of my favorite Japanese developers.
