Say Goodbye to SkyMall

We love SkyMall around here and, for a lot of people, it probably served as the “gadget blog” for early gadget-geeks long before you had places like TechnoBuffalo to learn about the latest toys and other oddities. Unfortunately, the popular in-flight shopping magazine may no longer grace seatback pockets. SkyMall LLC recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under Xhibit Corp., its parent company.

“With the increased use of electronic devices on planes, fewer people browsed the SkyMall in-flight catalog,” CEO Scott Wiley said, according to The Wall Street Journal. As folks looked to other things for entertainment, such as eReaders, tablets and smartphones, they stopped picking up the magazine and perusing its pages. SkyMall is planning to wind down its operations and to sell the business, though it currently doesn’t have any interested parties.

It’s possible, if a sale ever comes to fruition, that we’ll see SkyMall once again. It’s unlikely, however.
