Back in Nov., Twitter floated the idea for a new feature called “While You Were Away” that could offer a quick summary of everything you missed since the last time you signed in. The news sparked a passionate debate among the social network’s regular users, but now Twitter recaps are here whether you like it or not.
For the most part, Twitter’s newest feature seems like a good thing. Each time you boot up the social network after a long break you’ll see a collection of curated tweets from people you follow. If you only check in every so often, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on quite as much. As for Twitter obsessives who never leave, they probably won’t even notice anything’s changed.
“While You Were Away” is all about making Twitter a nicer experience for casual users. The kind of person who might create an account, but quickly become overwhelmed by the social network’s breakneck speed. Hopefully, this will keep them coming back for more.
At the moment, Twitter’s new recaps are only available on the official iOS app. An update for Android and the web is coming soon as well, though the company isn’t saying exactly when that might be.
