Tired of shelling out every month for an expensive 4G LTE contract? FreedomPop just announced a Wi-Fi-based alternative that’s as untraditional as it is enticing. For just $5 per month the company is offering access to a nationwide blanket of 10 million hotspots.

As you can see in the map above, FreedomPop’s Wi-Fi network doesn’t exactly cover the entire country equally, but if you’re in a major metropolitan area there shouldn’t be any issues. The company tells TechCrunch that it’s new service is a valid option for roughly 120 million American residents. The Wi-Fi itself will work on multiple devices, simply requiring an app that’s available now for Android and coming soon to iOS.

The company says it partnered with number of chains including McDonalds, Starbucks, Burger King and Best Buy. If you’re in range of one of these stores, you’ll connect to the Wi-Fi automatically. If not, you can always use one of FreedomPop’s data plans, which offer up to 500MB of cellular data, 500 texts and 200 minutes of calling per month for free. That may not sound like a lot, but if you’re always connected to Wi-Fi it may actually be more than you need.
