Apple Reminds Developers That New iOS Apps Must be 64-Bit

Apple has been emailing iOS developers to remind them that all iOS apps and games must now include 64-bit support for the Cupertino company’s latest A-series processors. The email also states that apps should be built using the latest iOS 8 SDK.

“As a reminder, beginning February 1, 2015 new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must include 64-bit support and be built with the iOS 8 SDK,” Apple’s email reads. Apps submitted without 64-bit support after that date will not receive App Store approval.

However, existing apps that have not yet been updated with 64-bit support are safe. If some of your favorite titles have gone without any attention for a while, then, you won’t have to worry about them being pulled. But the developers behind them will have to enable 64-bit support for any future updates.

Apple’s A7 processor, which was introduced with the iPhone 5s back in 2013, became the first mobile processor built upon 64-bit architecture — and the company’s latest A8 chips have followed in its footsteps. The change enables the processors to be not only more powerful, but also more efficient.

64-bit software is clearly the future for iOS, then, which is why Apple will stop approving iOS software that isn’t 64-bit starting next month. This change won’t just impact developers, though; the average user will see its benefits, too.

By enforcing support for its 64-bit processors, Apple is ensuring that new iOS releases are as fast and as efficient as they can be. Developers have already begun supporting the new standard, but some still aren’t, and hopefully this will encourage them to do so.
