Marriott: OK, We Won’t Block Your Wi-Fi Hotspots

Marriott came under fire last year for reportedly blocking personal Wi-Fi hotspots of guests who decided to use their own devices instead of the hotel’s own Wi-Fi systems. Consumers weren’t the only ones who took issue with these tactics, and in fact Microsoft and Google joined the fight to stop its actions. Now, Marriott is agreeing to backtrack on its practices.

“Marriott International listens to its customers, and we will not block guests from using their personal Wi-Fi devices at any of our managed hotels,” Marriott said in an e-mail to Inc. The hotel chain might have also been listening to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which filed a complaint against Marriott last year, alleging that Marriott’s decision to block Wi-Fi hotspots using cell jammers was illegal.

There are two sides to every story, however, and Marriott has argued that it was simply trying to protect customers from accessing potentially dangerous hotspots, especially in its hotel conference centers, and that it wanted to ensure a safe browsing experience for everyone.

The company told Inc that it’s still going to try to make sure it offers a secure environment, but it won’t do so by using cell jammers. That’s good news for everyone.
