Project Eternity

For a while, the record for the most successful video game on Kickstarter was Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian’s old-school RPG which pulled in $3,986,929, and it’s a game that nearly 74,000 backers a looking forward to finally playing. Although Torment: Tides of Numenera dethroned it a few months later by cracking the $4 million mark, one of these two games is far closer to release than the other one.

Fans and backers of Pillars of Eternity only have to wait three more months now, because it finally has an official release date set for March 26.

The official update on its Kickstarter blog claims that the polishing and debugging portion of development is going smoothly, and players looking forward to it can expect to find the game on Steam, GOG, and “other online retailers.” The release date is actually an entire year after the original set date which was spring 2014! However, after pulling in so much money, Obsidian obviously had to go back and change the scope of the original vision.

Pillars of Eternity is an old-school overhead RPG that plays similarly to Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. It seems fitting that information on this game is finally coming out as Beamdog has also announced its plans to develop the first original Baldur’s Gate game in 15 years! As you may know, Obsidian is made up of members from the former Black Isle Studio, and no doubt some of the people working on Pillars of Eternity has their hands in the original Baldur’s Gate games.

It’s a weird scenario of “the old guys developing a new game” and “the new guys developing an old game.”

Pillars of Eternity will launch on March 26 for the PC. I was not a backer of this game, but I might get around to picking it up somewhere down the line.
