BlackBerry Denies Engaging In Takeover Talks With Samsung

BlackBerry Classic vs Passport-6

Did you hear? Sources claim Samsung approached BlackBerry about a possible sale (maybe worth over $7 billion). But, in record time, BlackBerry has responded by saying the report just isn’t true. Below is the exact wording straight from BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) (“BlackBerry”) is aware of certain press reports published today with respect to a possible offer by Samsung to purchase BlackBerry. BlackBerry has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry. BlackBerry’s policy is not to comment on rumors or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.

The report from this afternoon claimed Samsung executives recently met with BlackBerry’s top brass to discuss an acquisition, but it appears nothing of the sort happened. If that’s the case, then where did today’s report come from? BlackBerry probably won’t worry about the “wheres” and “whys;” its shares were up nearly 30-percent following the news, giving it a nice end-of-day boost.

Samsung has yet to comment on the rumor, so we’ll look out for word from a spokesperson.
