You remember the Gold Saucer, am I right? How many countless hours of your precious youth did you waste hacking through Final Fantasy VII’s ridiculous mini-games? My count stands at more than I want to admit. A giant meteor is hanging in the sky about to crush every being in existence, but Cloud’s desire to breed a few generations of Chocobos clearly takes precedence over the crisis at hand.
And let’s not even get started on G-Bike, Boss Rushes, and snowboarding as Tifa!
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is bringing back this legendary video game setting in its latest update, “Patch 2.5 ‘Before the Fall’ (Part I).” A new trailer points out all of the other areas, enemies, spells, and items you’ll be able to access with the expansion, but far and away the Gold Saucer is the highlight of this ten minute montage real.
Start at the 4:37 mark to take a dive into old memories. First off, you’ll notice that a bouncy remix of the classic background music plays while you are touring the grounds. While playing, you’ll be able to undertake a wide variety of mini-games, both new and old! Triple Triad, Final Fantasy VIII’s addictive card game, returns to the fold, and even the classic basketball and virtual punching “Rock-Paper-Scissors” mini-games from Final Fantasy VII pops up again.
And the Gold Saucer just wouldn’t be the same without Chocobo racing, would it? New games include a high striker machine, crane games, and even footraces, for whenever you get tired of racing birds, I suppose.
All that’s missing is “Mog House.” Remember that little gem?
If this Gold Saucer footage is not tempting enough, be sure to check out the scene set to the remixed Final Fantasy V “Gilgamesh Theme” immediately afterwards. That will get your old-school Final Fantasy blood boiling.
I’ve said for a while that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is that absolute best entry from the franchise in recent memory that perfectly captures the spirit of the older games, and everything I see in this trailer only adds to that notion. More importantly though, Naoki Yoshida and his development team seem to know what the fans want, making him one of the perfect candidates to carry the torch of the series for a while.
I would really really love to play Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, but I am sticking true to my self-imposed ban from MMORPGs. This is the hardest game to look away from yet. Patch 2.5 ‘Before the Fall’ (Part I) will be released on Jan. 20 at no extra charge. It can be played on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.
