Metal Gear Solid V’s Chicken Hat Explained by Konami

In line with the typical awkward sense of humor Hideo Kojima finds in-between the cracks of Metal Gear Solid’s deadpan serious attitude, his latest game includes a “chicken hat” that horribly clashes with other images of murder, torture, anesthesia-free surgery, and horribly misplaced bombs.

It would be easy just to write-off or enjoy this chicken hat as a silly gag, depending on what you take from Metal Gear games. However, it does serve a purpose in the gameplay, and that is to allow players to skip sections of the game that they find too difficult. Just put the chicken hat on Snake’s head and voila, you can “chicken out” of the game’s difficult sections!

Eurogamer says the only downside is that Snake ends up looking “ridiculous,” but I am having a hard time seeing the downside here. I think it looks hilarious, and I might just skip a pointless mission or two just for the chance to wear it!

Ninja Gaiden Black fans might remember the “Ninja Dog” statue which was given to players who lowered the difficultly level. These fans were left with a humiliating pink ribbon tied to their arms for the remainder of the game. Similar kind of story, but I’m certainly glad the chicken hat is a bit more fun.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in 2015.
