Disgaea 5’s Anime Intro is the Stuff of Legends

I did a piece recently lamenting the slow and quiet death of excellent video game intro sequences, but Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is out to disprove me. Back in the PlayStation days, you couldn’t turn on a game without an amazing introduction to welcome you, and sometimes, you just had to watch it. These amazing clips created an emotional hook to latch onto and get you hyped for the experience you were about to have, just like the best TV shows and cartoons.

I mentioned a few games, like the Etrian Odyssey Untold series, still have this practice under wraps, but this Disgaea 5 intro is simply astounding, nailing the formula perfectly!

What’s not to like about it? It hits in all the right emotional places, delivering high octane action and a ridiculous over-the-top song to match the series’ ludicrous sense of style. Each of our heroes gets enough time to shine and show off their moves without being burdened by exposition, and our main protagonist especially gets the chance to hint at his struggle against the oppressive demon lord.

Good stuff. Game developers! Look here for inspiration! This is still a viable practice in today’s video game world. I would love to see something like this every time I turn on a video game.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance launches for the PlayStation 4 in Japan on March 26. An English localization has been confirmed, but no date has been announced yet. My guess is you’ll be playing this by the end of summer.
