Nintendo of Europe is looking to reward early adopters of the New Nintendo 3DS with a special “Ambassador Edition.” Pre-orders for this special device have been live since this morning in Europe, and it is reportedly costing customers €205 (~$199.99).
Of course, scalpers already have theirs up on eBay for a ballpark figure of about $400 as well.
This Ambassador Edition comes with an exclusive Ambassador Cover Plate, a set of Super Smash Bros. cover plates, a charging cradle, and everything that will come with the standard New Nintendo 3DS release.
The original Nintendo 3DS’ Ambassador Program granted early devices the excellent ability to play free Game Boy Advance games, so by comparison, this new set of physical goodies seems a little like child’s play. Don’t get your hopes up for the old program happening ever again, because it won’t. Nintendo has GBA games on the Wii U now, and the emulation for GBA games on the Nintendo 3DS doesn’t allow it to properly shut down when closed like other emulators.
That goes against what Nintendo is looking to do with the device.
No word yet if there will be an Ambassador edition for the New Nintendo 3DS in the States, so we’ll keep an eye out for any news. I expect it will happen, but I’ll only look into it if this special version grants software bonuses like the aforementioned GBA games or an end to region-locking. Not going to happen, I know, but I can dream, can’t I?
Otherwise, I am more than happy playing my normal Nintendo 3DS while I wait for a price drop or an exclusive game worth playing.
