T-Mobile CEO John Legere Makes 2015 Predictions

Technology moves at such a rapid pace that it’s hard to predict what’s coming down the line, but we’re pretty confident that, at least in the mobile space, phablets, faster LTE networks and wearables will all be key topics in 2015. T-Mobile CEO John Legere agrees. In a recent blog post, the executive discussed some of T-Mobile’s plans for 2015, made a few predictions and, of course, took a few jabs at the company’s wireless competitors.

Legere reiterated some statements made by T-Mobile chief technology officer Neville Ray earlier this month, noting that the company plans to expand its 4G LTE network to cover more than 300 million people in the United States. Legere also expanded on that, noting that T-Mobile plans to cover more than 150 metro areas with its new wideband LTE and to activate its new 700Mhz spectrum, which penetrates buildings better, in 350 metro areas.

T-Mobile will continue to fight for additional low-band spectrum, Legere explained, but said he expects that it will continue to be a bitter battle with Verizon and AT&T over that spectrum. And speaking of competitors, he had some choice words for both, while also noting that T-Mobile plans to overcome Sprint as the third wireless carrier in 2015 (a goal he originally predicted would happen by the end of 2014).

Finally, Legere also believes that the Apple Watch, set to launch in early 2015, will officially push the wearable market “from niche to mainstream,” and that “we haven’t even begun to see the potential of this category.” That sounds like a fair bet, though Android Wear seems to be picking up steam lately, too.
