‘The Interview’ is Now Available on iTunes

Despite reportedly snubbing the opportunity to sell The Interview on opening day, Apple is now offering this year’s most controversial movie through iTunes. Prices start at $5.99 for a rental or $14.99 if you want to own the film, which is available in 1080p HD as standard.

Those are the same prices you’ll pay for The Interview through Google Play and Microsoft’s Xbox Video, so it’s really all about which platform is most convenient to you. If you’re an Android user you’ll likely be better off with Google Play, while those watching the movie on Macs and iOS devices will surely prefer iTunes.

Just a few weeks ago, it looked like The Interview may never get an official release. It was pulled from theaters in the U.S. ahead of its Christmas Day opening following the massive hack on Sony Pictures, but after criticism from movie stars, producers, and even President Barack Obama, Sony announced on Christmas Eve that the movie would be released the same day in the U.S. and Canada.

Google Play/YouTube, iTunes, and Xbox Video are currently the only platforms where you can buy or rent The Interview — legally, at least — but Variety reports that Netflix is currently negotiating a deal with Sony to add the movie to its own library.

The Interview pulled in more than $15 million over the holiday weekend from online purchases and rentals alone — just in the U.S. and Canada. That compares to just $2.8 million that it made in theaters. Perhaps this will inspire Sony and other studios to release other films digitally on opening day.
