Kojima’s Christmas Day Video Wasn’t What we Expected

Metal Gear creator and director Hideo Kojima loves to play jokes on his fans. The biggest troll he ever pulls will be when, someday, it turns out he isn’t trolling us. That day hasn’t come yet, though.

After rumors of a very near release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain surfaced recently, it was theorized that his then-upcoming edition of Kojima Station would reveal the date officially. The timing sure seemed convenient, and why spend Christmas at work if it wasn’t for something big?

Well, fans of the creator watched his stream for well over two and a half hours, talking about just about everything he could think of, dragging it out far longer than any recent episode of the show. Finally, it was time for the big reveal.

As Kotaku notes, it was games media that hyped the stream. He does these videos regularly and while Japan does celebrate Christmas – typically with Kentucky Fried Chicken and cake, if I remember correctly – it’s not a national holiday like it is here. So, maybe it’s our fault. Then again, Kojima loves to play elaborate games like this, so why not let us speculate and wonder, only to release a hilarious picture of Snake in a chicken hat?

Apparently, it goes like this: If you get caught a lot, the game will ask you, “Would you like to use a Chicken cap?”

When you answer yes, you’ll wear that hat and your enemies will take longer to react, giving you an edge on the battlefield. You’ll also see the hat during cut scenes, though, so it’s going to stifle any drama the game attempts to create. But you’ll be wearing a chicken hat. So, you know, weigh the pros and cons when Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hits PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2015.
