Here’s How Apple Made That Awesome Holiday Ad “The Song”

Earlier this week, Apple released The Song, a touching holiday ad that showed how the company’s own products could be used to create an extremely personal gift. Now, Cupertino’s offered up a behind-the-scenes video that reveals how much work actually went into making the short commercial.

It turns out The Song’s star, Dana Williams, isn’t just an actress. She’s actually a talented singer in her own right who produced the track for Apple’s ad using GarageBand on a MacBook. “Anyone who’s not tech savvy like myself can just find my way about it,” she says of the popular music-making software.

Meanwhile, the original track that Williams remixes in the ad was actually recorded by a second vocalist. Even cooler, it was recorded at Third Man Records, a Detroit label founded by rock legend Jack White. To give the recording that grainy sound, Apple used a vintage “Record Your Own Voice” machine that takes a few minutes of sound and prints it straight onto a record.

Check out the full behind-the-scenes video at the top of this post, or if you’re short on time we’ve put together a quick slideshow just below.
