Witcher Dev Confirms Wild Hunt’s Second Playable Character

After the recent reveal that a second character would be playable in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, fans (myself included) have been speculating about who that might be and how the character will be integrated into the game.

Developement studio CD Projekt Red confirmed today to IGN that the playable character will be the one who starred in the most recent set of trailers, Ciri. They also confirmed that it won’t be a GTA V-style scenario where you switch back and forth at will. Instead, you’ll switch to her for some of the significant moments of the game’s story.

“Ciri is playable only during certain moments in the game – we introduce her to give gamers another perspective in the story to make it even more engaging,” said Robert Malinowski. “You won’t play as her for long periods of time, but since she’s crucial to the plot, we thought that additional insight will allow gamers to better bond with this cool character.”

Ciri plays a large role in the Witcher novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Ciri is the embodiment of an ancient prophecy and as such is hotly pursued by a number of interested parties, including the Wild Hunt itself, the Nilfgaardian empire, and others. She was trained as an apprentice Witcher by Geralt and a sorceress by Yennefer, also featured in the most recent trailer. She’ll have Geralt’s speed and agility and, according to IGN, the ability to do blink-style teleportation (like Corvo in Dishonored), and at least one other power CD Projekt Red hasn’t yet revealed.

After a delay last week, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to release May 19, 2015.
