Chromecast App Gets a Material Design Update with Guest Mode and More

Google is pushing out a pretty big update for its Android Chromecast app today, ushering in a fresh look and new features. Material Design, Guest Mode and screen mirroring are all included in the updated application.

The big news here is Guest Mode, which lets anyone with a device running Android 4.3 or newer cast videos to your TV without needing to log into your Wi-Fi. You’ll have to enable Guest Mode using your own phone or tablet, but after that you’re good to go. Google also released a short video explaining how the new feature works.

Meanwhile, anyone with an Android 4.4.2 or up should be able to try screen mirroring on the updated app, though this feature is still in beta. It might not be available for everyone just yet, but it looks like Google is expanding the beta test to more people with today’s update.

Finally, the new Chromecast app adopts Android 5.0 Lollipop’s Material Design aesthetic for a sleek new look. The update in rolling out in waves, so it may not show up yet on Google Play. If you just can’t wait, Droid-Life is also offering access to a direct link to an APK so you can sideload the app for yourself.
