HTC is already falling behind the competition when it comes to wearable technology, but the company recently confirmed plans to launch its first wrist-based device early next year. Speaking to VentureBeat this week, an HTC spokesperson said the firm’s first wearable would make its debut next month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
If you’ve been holding out hope for an HTC smartwatch we’ve got some bad news. The company says it’s not planning to compete head on with devices like the Apple Watch, Moto 360 or Samsung’s Gear lineup. Instead it’s working on something else entirely, though the device will still live on your wrist. HTC’s spokesperson wouldn’t offer any specifics, but promised something “very different from anything currently on the market.”
If HTC isn’t working on a smartwatch our best guess would be a souped-up fitness tracker, though the company clearly has something unexpected up its sleeve. We’ll be at CES 2015 next month to check out this mysterious wearable for ourselves ahead of its official launch in the first quarter of 2015.
