As promised, Samsung’s Gear VR is now available to order online, though at $200 it won’t come cheap. The company’s first virtual reality headset made it’s official debut back in September, and last month Samsung promised that an early “Innovator Edition” was on the way.
Developed in co-operation with Oculus, the Gear VR features a similar design with one clear difference. Samsung’s device requires a smartphone to function, specifically the Galaxy Note 4. That means it won’t work at all if you don’t have the company’s latest phablet on hand.
There are cheaper options out there, most notably Google Cardboard, which offers a similar experience but works with a number of Android phones. Samsung’s biggest advantage may be the partnerships it’s already established with companies like Marvel, DreamWorks and Vevo, and based on recent demos the device should offer plenty of high-quality content right off the bat.
