Street Fighter V is Official, Has PC, PS4 Cross Platform Play

A trailer leaked late last week announcing Street Fighter V. At Sony’s PlayStation Experience this weekend, Adam Boyes announced that Ultra Street Fighter IV is heading to PlayStation 4 and then moved onto other announcements.

Then, later in the show, Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono took the stage with Boyes to formally announce Street Fighter V itself. As the trailer suggested, the game is a PlayStation 4 and PC exclusive.

The exclusivity is not timed – this game is not heading to Xbox One at all, ever. Not only that, the game will feature cross-platform play between the PC and PlayStation 4 players, something we’ve only seen one or two times before – the Shadowrun first-person shooter that hit Xbox 360 back in 2007 is the only one I can think of.

Let’s go ahead and put an asterisk on that lifetime exclusivity right now, though. As even the most casual Street Fighter fans know, the series gets a new version about every 2 weeks. Street Fighter IV alone has had the original, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Ultra Street Fighter IV. My guess is that the contract is for this initial version and that we’ll see Ultra Mega Hyper Street Fighter V: Championship Edition hitting the Xbox One as well.

Even if I’m wrong, the exclusivity is a big win for Sony, and the cross-platform play is great for the fighting game community as well.
