HTC reportedly plans to keep pushing into the action cam market with a follow-up to the recently released RE. The second-generation camera will launch sometime next year, HTC’s North Asia President Jack Tong told Focus Taiwan.
Just like the current RE, the follow-up device will also be sold as a stand-alone camera, though we’re guessing it will work pretty seamlessly with your smartphone as well. Tong didn’t offer a specific date or launch window. Considering that the original RE is still rolling out it could be a while before a second version hits the market.
The device is finally set to launch in Taiwan this Wednesday, and the company is predicting that about five percent of smartphone buyers will want one. That’s 400,000 customers in HTC’s home country. “If we can cross this threshold, it will be easier to sell the new camera,” Tong said.
The current RE camera packs a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 146 degree wide angle lens. It’s possible a follow-up device could offer an even more powerful camera, a slimmer design or maybe even a small built-in viewfinder. It’s really too soon to say, but we still can’t wait to see how the company plans to improve what’s already a pretty sweet little device.
