LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition Gets Android 5.0 Lollipop

LG G Pad 8.3-Front

LG worked quickly to make its G3 one of the first third-party smartphones to run Android 5.0 Lollipop earlier this month, and now the South Korean company is bringing the same software to its G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition tablet.

Because this is a Google Play Edition device, the software it is receiving is almost identical to that of Google’s own Nexus tablets; it sports that gorgeous Material Design makeover without any third-party tweaks, improved multitasking and notifications, and performance and battery life enhancements.

The update also brings lock screen notifications, a new battery saving mode, and features like Priority Mode and Smart Lock. It weighs in at just over 405MB, according to the users who first reported its rollout via the XDA Developers forum.

Google and partners like HTC and Sony have been receiving some criticism for not bringing Lollipop to Google Play Edition devices quickly enough following its consumer debut on November 3. When the search giant announced the GPE program, it promised that included devices would receive the latest Android software within two weeks of its release, but that hasn’t been the case with Android 5.0.

It’s nice to see GPE devices finally getting some Lollipop love, then. If you haven’t already received the update on your device, check the software updates section inside the Settings app.
