Karbonn Mobiles’ first Android One handset is now on sale in the U.K. The Sparkle V, which first made its debut in India back in September, can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk for just £129.99 (approx. $205).
Google’s Android One platform was designed to bring affordable but capable Android smartphones to emerging markets like India and China, but of course, there’s a demand for cheap devices in established markets, too. Perhaps that’s why Karbonn is testing the waters in the U.K. with the Sparkle V.
For £129.99, the Sparkle V delivers a 4.5-inch display with a 854×480 resolution, a quad-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1.3GHz, 1GB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. The device also has 4GB of internal storage, dual SIM card slots, and a microSD card slot for expansion.
The Sparkle V ships with Android 4.4.4 KitKat pre-installed, but because it’s an Android One device, it should get an Android 5.0 Lollipop update at some point.
So, should the Sparkle V be on your shopping list if you’re looking for an affordable Android-powered phone? Well, probably not. Sure, it’s super cheap, but you can get better devices in the U.K. for around the same price.
The original Moto G, for example, has a sharper 720p display, double the amount of internal storage, and a larger battery — and it’s £1 cheaper than the Sparkle V. The second-generation Moto G also has a better display, a faster processor, and a better rear-facing camera — and it’s just £10 (approx. $16) more expensive.
However, on Friday, November 28 — for one day only — the Sparkle V will be available for just £99 (approx. $156). We’d still recommend a Moto G if you can afford it, but if your budget’s super tight, Karbonn’s handset may be worth a look.
