EA has stated that it is taking a break from the Need for Speed franchise on consoles as it figures out how to move the series beyond Criterion Games’ image of it. In the meantime, that doesn’t mean it has to stop releasing mobile games while Ghost Games thinks of a winning next-gen formula.
Need for Speed: No Limits is under development for iPad, iPhone, and Android platforms by Real Racing 3 developer Firemonkeys. No pricing plan has been announced yet, but Real Racing 3 sported a free-to-play model. Who knows if EA is willing to carry that over into its marquis racing franchise?
Executive Producer Robert Huebner explains that Firemonkeys has “built No Limits from the ground up to deliver the insanely-fast driving and incredible graphics that fans have come to expect from Need for Speed – all in the palm of your hand.”
“The team at Firemonkeys has also been bringing Need for Speed to mobile gamers for years, and it’s an honor and a privilege to once again get behind the wheel of this incredible franchise and redefine street racing on mobile.”
I guess it is enough to hold over the franchise until the next big release, but I hope Ghost Games gets on with it quickly. There once was a time when Burnout dominated my racing life, but Need For Speed’s better sales figures saw that brief stint come to a close. I hope that sacrifice won’t have been made in vain.
Need or Speed: No Limits will be released on iOS and Android sometime in 2015.
