Reddit has seen massive change and tremendous growth since it first launched back in 2005. Now, the company’s co-founder and popular Internet personality Alexis Ohanian is returning to run the website after leaving in 2010. For the past four years he served as a Reddit board member, but kept busy with a number of other projects. He’s now the executive chairman.
Ohanian announced the news in a post to Reddit yesterday titled “Coming home,” confirming that Yishan Wong was resigning from the position of CEO after two and a half years. In a separate post to Quora (via Forbes), Wong explained that the job had been extremely stressful. The final decision, however, was caused by a dispute over the location of Reddit’s Bay Area office.
Reddit lawyer Ellen Pao will become interim CEO. It’s unclear exactly what she and Ohanian have planned for Reddit, though Ohanian notes that the site needs to improve its user experience, community tools and mobile presence. That’s not much to go on, but we’re excited to see what comes next for the website once one of its original creators is back in charge.
