Samsung just announced that its Gear VR virtual reality headset will finally be available to purchase next month. The “Innovator Edition” model is set to hit the U.S. in early December.
“Samsung is excited to launch our first virtual reality experience, Gear VR Innovator Edition,” said the company’s virtual reality chief Nick DiCarlo. “We are looking forward to working with developers and partners on building amazing, accessible virtual reality experiences, that help bring the immersion of VR mainstream over the coming months and years.”
We’ve already had a few opportunities to try the Gear VR and it’s already an impressive piece of kit. The one drawback is that you’ll need a Galaxy Note 4 to use the device, though that may help keep the price down for the actual headset. The Innovator Edition will presumably target developers over regular consumers, and Samsung is also releasing a software development kit.
The Gear VR will ship with some exclusive content thanks to early partnerships with Marvel, DreamWorks and Vevo, and there’s even a virtual reality version of Temple Run. However, Samsung also worked directly with Oculus on the device, which means it has access to Oculus Home, the Oculus Store, Oculus Cinema, and Oculus 360 Video and Photos as well
Samsung hasn’t revealed how much the first Gear VR models will cost or exactly when the device will be available, but we’ll let you know as soon as those details are announced.
