Motorola Mobility is now officially part of the Lenovo family after the $2.91 billion acquisition that was first announced back in February is finalized. The Motorola brand won’t be going anywhere, however — and neither will the company’s headquarters in Chicago.
Lenovo very much wants to keep Motorola running as a separate company, so you won’t be seeing Moto X handsets with the Lenovo logo on them anytime soon. In addition, the existing Motorola team will remain.
“As excited as we are about what’s changing, we’re also pleased with what we are carrying forward with us,” explained Rick Osterloh, Motorola president, in a blog post on the company’s website today. “The iconic Motorola brand will continue, as will the Moto and DROID franchises that have propelled our growth over the past year.”
Motorola will stay focused on some of the things that have made its smartphones so popular in recent years — including a pure Android software experience and fast updates, and a commitment to developing technology that solves “real consumer problems.”
Today’s news comes almost ten months after Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for $2.1 billion — only two years after it bought the company for $12.5 billion. While many thought the deal was crazy, Google explained that it was mostly interested in Motorola’s major patent portfolio, which it will continue to hold onto.
“Motorola is in great hands with Lenovo, a company that’s all-in on making great devices,” said Google CEO Larry Page in a press release issued by Lenovo this morning.
