Final Fantasy Type-0 has been praised by those who have played it for its incredibly bleak and war-focused storyline, and many fans claim that it is far and away the darkest the franchise has ever been. With the game finally being localized in America for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Square Enix needs to bring the newcomers up to speed with how serious this thing can get.
A new trailer spells out the main plot of the incoming HD port. Two countries find themselves at war after a surprise invasion, and a band of teenagers from an elite military academy are all that stand between the warring powers and utter destruction. Using teenagers as mercenaries and soldiers is territory that Final Fantasy VIII explored back in the late 90s, but director Hajime Tabata claims that this game is based on his love of history.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is looking to give the series a fresh start on the new console generation after the whole “PlayStation 3/Xbox 360” thing didn’t exactly work out as Square Enix envisioned. Even though it is a port of a PSP game, the game is a blast to play and looks great on the new technology. I got to go hands-on with it at Tokyo Game Show 2014, and I called it my “Game of the Show” in a tie with From Software’s Bloodborne.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD will launch on March 17 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it will come packaged with an exclusive demo for Final Fantasy XV.
