The Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact may offer one of the most impressive smartphone cameras in the Android ecosystem, but owners are reporting a new issue that could render the 20.7-megapixel shooter practically useless. Reports of a large pink spot appearing in the middle of photos taken with the Z3 have been popping up across the web, suggesting the issue could be widespread.
For now, we’re only seeing the same few photos posted as evidence to Reddit, XDA-Developers and Sony’s own support forum, so it’s tough to confirm how common the pink spot really is. However, it looks like multiple people have confirmed the issue for both the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact, which both offer the same rear camera. There’s also no word on whether the Verizon-exclusive Z3v has the same issue, though it features the same 20.7-megapixel shooter. We haven’t noticed any issues with our test unit, which offers a solid camera experience overall.
How Sony chooses to fix the issue depends on what’s causing the pink spot in the first place. A problem with the Z3’s software could probably be corrected with a simple update, while any hardware issues could mean sending your device in for repairs.
